about floors
putting down laminate floors is not too hard. like any other home improvement project, there's always more prep and clean-up than there is actual fun building stuff. and you'll always run into a snag.

when i pulled up the old carpet, i made a vow to myself never to have carpet again. you don't know how disgusting it is under there. barforama. i had to scrape the underpad off the old tile floor with a putty knife. then i carefully removed the old quarter-round. if you don't know what this is, then installing laminate floors is not for you. i slit the paint on the top of the quarter-round but it still popped some paint off the baseboards... oh well. more clean-up later. i managed to get all the pieces off without breaking anything major! it needed sanding though, and repainting because whoever painted the last time (not me) got edge of carpet stuck in the paint. *sigh* we also had to cut down the door jambs to accommodate the new thickness in the floor. *so* fun. not.

then it's time for a whole lot of measuring. you'll need a calculator for this bit, because you don't want to end up with a little sliver of board for the length of your room at the end, or a dinky little piece somewhere. and you can't start in the middle, you have to start on one side. and you have to take into account the direction of the light in the room. once you have it all worked out, you can rip your first piece on the table saw and realize you screwed up once you lay it down. then you realize you forgot to staple down the underpad, so you do that. then you can start over with the measurements and such and eventually you get going laying pieces down.

ours didn't want to click in endwise, so we had to hammer them all together with a special block. no biggie. we ran into several problems going into corners and closets, and doing doorways is a nightmare. in the end, with all our fiddling and measuring and jigsawing and dryfitting and resawing and farting around... we still have a few gaps to fill with some kind of putty... i'm still working that out.

the dust from cutting this stuff is ugly. fine, green (in our case) and gets into everything, including my eye, which ron dribbled drops into for half an hour trying to clear... i kept the table saw outside but used the jigsaw inside. there's dust everywhere, but it's sitting on top of the regular dust that normally coats our house.... *sigh* there just aren't enough hours in the day.

once the floor is laid down, it's just a matter of replacing the quarter round, touching up the paint, fitting the thresholds in, cleaning up the dust, finding some sort of wood filler for the gaps around the doors, replacing all the furniture, taking the old carpet to the dump, and getting used to the new echo in your room.

yeah, it's a hell of a lot of work, but it sho' looks good, baybee....

little miss poopy hands
so ron and i are having a back and forth over email about the house, and furniture, and moving, and looking for a new house, and his job applications.... and suddenly i get a nasty terse reply to an innocent comment and then silence.

**blink**

ok, i think, it's a bad day. no problem. heh... little did i know....

he comes back on a few hours later, with an eloquent and bashful apology, stating that the reason he freaked out was because he caught gracie in her room, up to her elbows in the diaper pail, with a "big baseball-sized ball of poop" in her hand... which she wanted to hand to him.

BWAHAHAHAHAA!! course, i wasn't there, so i think it's funny. he probably broke the sound barrier whishing her to the bathtub. my husband is ok with diapers, and barf and stuff, but i guess this one pushed him over the edge.

pray for him: he's trying to nap it off now. i'm still chuckling a bit, i admit it. :P

meanwhile, in house news.... we feel good about oshawa, but i am less confident than ever that it is going to work out the way i imagined. i love the space and the lack of maintenance, so that's good. there are playgrounds right in the complexes, which is wonderful. but we are not going to eliminate our debt, more like cut it in half, which isn't horrible, but not great either (i *so* want it GONE). and the commute is going to be the same, though i will never have to take a bus again, which means i will never have to barf in my lap and then carry it all the way home again, which is very very good. we will be much farther from my parents, but much closer to my brother and gg's 2 cousins. and much closer to my best friend and her 2 kids, one of which is a girl only 4 months younger than gg. very good. but it won't be the life-changing financial makeover i was hoping for, and when ron has to come up with tuition in august.... well, we might be right back at square one financially. really i think what will make the most difference in the end is ron having some kind of part time work that brings in $100 bucks a week or so... grocery money. or savings money, or gg's money, or whatever.... just some extra cash so we're not so desperately strapped all the time. are we nuts to go to all the trouble of moving, for mediocre results? *are* these mediocre results? will they make a big difference? is that loosening all i need to be more comfortable? will it all go to pot when we need to come up with more tuition, or have another baby?

i just want to be out of debt. so bad, it hurts. i've carried a huge credit card balance for years, and i'm sick to death of it. i want it gone.

flooring
ok, i'm about to take the plunge... i've ripped out some of the carpet, i'm going to continue with the prep. tonight i'm buying some flooring. then saturday my dad is coming over and we're installing it. hallway first, but i hope to move on to the study. this is bad news for ron, who loves his new deskal arrangement and has only had it briefly... but the floor is so disgusting it MUST be done. wish me luck. i really think this is an easy job, after all, on trading spaces they do a room overnight all the time with this laminate stuff. it's just moving all the furniture that's so nasty.

S-M-R-T
hey, for a minute there i couldn't find the clicky thingey to make a new post. but there it is, it says, "new post". how clever. here i am, one of ron's babes -- no scratch that, THE ron's babe, joining you all in blog land. i'm warning you all right now, if you don't read me, i'll be real upset. i might cry. and if you do read me, just a warning, my life is crazy busy and likely there will be gaps, you know, gaps, where i'm working and repairing and looking after gg and maybe even sleeping, so there won't be updates as often as you all would like. plus, i have to learn how this fool thing works!!! is there some kind of privacy thing, so i can talk about ron without him reading?? oh, hi honey, didn't see you there.... heh heh..... :P plus we want to sell our house so there is this whole floor thing... really, carpet is disgusting. if you have carpet, i'm telling you, no matter how clean you are, and how much you clean your house, your carpet is a festering nest of gunk, germs and nastiness. GROSS. i'm never getting carpet again. plus i work, sometimes really hard, so i don't have much time, except for today, which is kinda quiet.

where was i?

oh yeah.... HI!!
