The I'm Clearly Going To Hell Edition

Let's just face it right now...the world is an upside down screwed up mess right now. The other night at my softball game, beyond the left field wall, a woman was doing some power walking. Now on the face of it, I have nothing against 'power walking' per se. While I've never engaged in 'power walking' myself, I can understand how someone would see the benefits of 'power walking'. (Full disclosure: While as I said I've never engaged in 'power walking', I have on several occasions done some 'power drinking' and also 'power napping'...often one right after the other which good because if 'power napping' doesn't follow the 'power drinking' then one might find themselves engaged in a bit of 'power vomiting' and inevitably...'power praying to God to stop the room from spinning at the speed of light') Now the only problem I could see with this woman's version of 'power walking' was that instead of the traditional robotic thrusting of the arms to the rythym of the stride, she was throwing her hands way into the air, as if pulling imaginary apples off on an imaginary tree (which would lead me to posit she might actually have been 'power hallucinating' after some 'power smoking of a bong'...but I digress...) Perhaps she was leading a marching band? Playing some John Phillips Sousa on her Walkman?? Or...playfully tugging at the imaginary trunk of an imaginary elephant?? Whatever she was doing she just looked plain ridiculous. I told you that story as a precursor to the more serious insanity running amok in our backyards. The real shenanigans...like Tom DeLay writing a nasty letter to the creators of "Law & Order" for making a reference to him in joking fashion in an episode where a judge has been killed. Now I don't know about you...but which do you find more offensive? A fictional character on a TV show making a joke about a Congressman who insinuated that judges might have to pay for their "reckless" judicial decisions with their lives, OR...the Congressman himself for saying it in the first place. See, I think the latter is the problem. Doesn't Tom DeLay have better things to do, like robbing women of their right to choose, ripping off Social Security to feed the Stock Market, and gerrymandering congressional districts to keep Republicans in power?? I mean seriously...that's a lot of stuff to do even when you aren't being investigated for a half dozen ethics violations. Where does he find the time? I have a full day if I have to go to the bank AND the dry cleaners. Congressman DeLay I think you're working waaaaaaay too hard...perhaps its time for another lobbyist paid "fact-finding mission" to Scotland to play golf. Or how about the school that wouldn't let a pregnant girl walk with her graduating class because well...she was pregnant. While I don't think it's a great thing that a teenage high school student got pregnant...the fact that she apparently did so AND still managed to pass classes and graduate rather than dropping out and becoming a burden on society as another casualty in the welfare state, doesn't that at least deserve allowing her to walk with her fellow classmates? Especially when the father of the baby was allowed to graduate? (Good for her, for standing up and walking across the stage and announcing her own name...before being thrown out by security) Perhaps that isn't silly enough for you, so how about the high school drama club in LA that made posters which featured President Bush dressed as Graucho Marx for their comedy show, and when one (that's ONE) student complained they made them take them down because according to the principal "We had one student who was very upset...If something is bothering a student on campus, we're going to address it." Hmm...guess all the students in school must really love those Chem finals then huh? Because I know when I was in school, my chemistry final really pissed ME off...not to mention homework, acne, gym lockers, oh and waking up at 7am. This is a big cruel world, but I think if anyone can take being made to look like Graucho Marx it might be, oh I don't know...THE MOST POWERFUL MAN IN THE WORLD!!! Plus Graucho was pretty cool...I'd think if anyone would have a problem comparing George Bush to Graucho it would be, you know...Graucho. But he's dead. And the Republicans are all about the culture of life. Now as you know, I supported the invasion of Iraq. Still do by the way. Don't necessarily support how MY government has performed but okay... Yet I have to scratch my head, and do a few spit takes when I read President Bush defend his opposition to stem cell research by saying that he doesn't support anything that takes life to potentially save other lives. Um...like pre-emptive war? You know the whole "the good of the many outweigh the needs of the one" was something even Trekkies understand...so I'm sure Rumsfeld gets it...cause I think he probably looks pretty snappy in Klingon outfit. Well perhaps the "culture of life" doesn't count for the stupid people among us who get Alzheimer's (Ronald Reagan), diabetes (my Dad) and horrific crippling injuries (Christopher Reeve). I guess you are all just 'Red Shirts' to the 'Red States' Nice how I mixed political AND science-fiction metaphors don't you think?? Look, reasonable people can disagree about the stem cell issue. I'm sure there are several friends, or family, of mine who probably consider themselves firmly in the 'Right To Life' camp. And that's fine. We all have a right to our opinion. But we should at least have some consistency. This is actually where I think I'm a fine example of how to be constant in a political issue. I'm Pro-Choice, Pro-Death Penalty AND *for* the war...clearly I support death all down the line. I might be wrong...but at least I'm consistent! Go Death, Yay Death!! (look, a Buffy reference...I'm outdoing myself and making several of my friends laugh...I love me sometimes) Speaking of consistency...I don't want to get into the whole "did we or did we not flush the Koran down a toilet" because there's just nothing I could say that wouldn't offend half of you, and probably scare the other half of you so I'll just leave my thoughts on the subject with this.. Can we at least agree upon how to SPELL THE DAMN THING!!! Is it Koran (which I've always thought) or Quron, Qu'ran...please just pick one and let's move on. Okay, I guess I will say something (see how I lie?) and it is this...if flushing the Koran (clearly I'm choosing this as the appropriate spelling) down the toilet doesn't bother you, ask yourself this question: Would it bother you if it was the King James Bible?. And if the Koran being flushed down the toilet DOES bother you, ask yourself this question: Do you really think a healthy majority of Muslims would be upset if some Muslim guards were found flushing Bibles down the toilet?. Do you see my point?? Yes clearly I don't care. Why?? Because it shouldn't affect your faith in whatever deity you believe in. (see this is the part where I'm getting into Hell on the frequent FRYER miles) Yes you might think your book of choice is "holy", but it isn't THE BOOK itself that is holy, it is the ideas within and those can't get flushed down a toilet by anyone. The leather bound book itself is just a symbol, a sacred symbol yes, but symbols, while powerful to be sure, are just that- symbols. Yes symbols are important, especially given the situation in the world but I'll leave the subject with this short tale: In the mid 80s my father worked for the Saudi Arabian Navy, training their sailors and showing them the ropes (literally!) <--that's a sailor knot joke for my Dad Anyway, after working with them several years, he was offered a very lucrative gig IN Saudi Arabia, except that um see...the Bible is banned there. You can't have one. So which is really worse? Flushing a holy scripture down a toilet, or not it to exist in the first place. If you want a really frightening read, check out the most recent (2004) State Department Executive Summary on religious discrimination around the world. I'm not saying that if they flushed the Koran (as they probably did) that they were right...I'm just saying that most of the glass-housed nations that saw massive protests against the US today should watch where they are throwing their stones. Yep the world is really screwed, upside down...why any day now we're just going to wake up and see the most bizarre sights imaginable...like Newt and Hillary joining forces on legisla...oh wait...that already happened!!! Run for your lives!!! THE END IS NIGH!!!!!!! Now is the time on Sprockets when we dance...or in this case give you health updates: First the important people: Shell's latest ultrasound today showed everything to be hunky and/or dory. My little baby girl is also growing big inside Mommy, and has very long femurs accoring to the nurse. So clearly she'll be taking after her mum and be a tall girl. Right now she's just about 2 pounds and seemed to be trying to take some practice breaths apparently (I don't know...it all looked like gray globs in there to me, but I'm not the professional). And now the non-important peopl- me...well my back feels better, I'm still stiff and the medication the doctor has me on is pretty severe at times, but hopefully I'll be able to finally get a whole week of work in next week. And now, the photo portion of our broadcast. Our friend Barb demanded that Shell and I take a picture of ourselves, so we donned silly hats and did as commanded! click for larger, pop-up photo Victoria Day weekend was last weekend so we took the puppies for a walk on the G'town trails. Shell and the pups explore an interesting rock formation click for larger, pop-up photo Interesting field of trees click for larger, pop-up photo Shell examines a shrub click for larger, pop-up photo Dixie and Willow had a fabulous time playing in the fields click for larger, pop-up photo A sticky pointy bush..ouch click for larger, pop-up photo Shell told me to go climb a tree... click for larger, pop-up photo so I did! click for larger, pop-up photo They were having a jousting tournament at the fairgrounds so Dixie got to meet a horsey :) click for larger, pop-up photo Two more horse pictures- mostly for Renee... click for larger, pop-up photo click for larger, pop-up photo Back home again and Shell started working on sanding and repainting the baby's room furniture- here she works on the dresser which will be sanded and painted a fresh white coat. click for larger, pop-up photo click for larger, pop-up photo Of course all Willow wants to do is play softball... click for larger, pop-up photo well that and try and sniff the hardware of the crib...Shell loves this picture because it totally captures Willow's spirit...curious and cute :P click for larger, pop-up photo I also did stuff...like prepping the back section for the new garden addition click for larger, pop-up photo And Dixie just watched...which is what Dixie does best. click for larger, pop-up photo As you can see the grass was getting pretty thick so I tried to cut it this week, however the lawnmower- which you might recall I ruined by running over the hidden water shut off valve when we first moved in- finally stopped working. Hopefully Shell can fix it, since she can fix most anything. I wound up having to borrow the neighbors mower, which actually cut the grass unlike what the electric mower had been doing for a while now, so its good and mowed...at least until a few days from now. Our grass grows sooooo fast. You know what else grows REALLY fast? - the rhubarb plant!! click for larger, pop-up photo and the bleeding hearts have come out as well... click for larger, pop-up photo click for larger, pop-up photo and finally the lilac tree is in full bloom....mmmm can't you just smell it? click for larger, pop-up photo Okay so I think I've held you up all for long enough...if you've hung on this long I'm very proud of you...I love you...and you should really lay off the cough syrup Until next time, Cheers

The Clip Show Edition

So here's the thing... I recently found some email addresses for very old friends, most of them from my days in the Beehive State, people I love and miss very much (if you're reading this you know who you are). So in one fell swoop I thought I'd run through a recap of the last 6 years or so, to catch those people up...in Hollywood, it's a clip show. In 1999 I moved to Utah. Lots of stuff happened. (If this was television you'd see flashbacks right now...if you're a Deadhead you're probably seeing flashbacks anyway...) In March of 2001 I met Shelley. In December of 2001 I left Utah. In 2003 Shell and I got married and I moved to Canada because she's Canadian and wanted to come home. In May of 2004 we bought a house in the country. In August of 2004 I started at the University of Toronto. In December of 2004 we found out we're having a baby. Ok so it's May now. If you missed any pertinent details you can read through the archives. The TGIF is my weekly (or whenever I feel like) weblog/journal/blog of thoughts, rants, and stories, sometimes funny, sometimes not. Oh and yes...loads of pictures. So we're all caught up now. (Really, I'm excited you're here reading this...trust me) As you might notice I've added a new little TGIF banner with me, sacked out on the couch and drooling, a bottle tucked under my arm. While this picture is somewhere in the neighborhood of 36 years old, I assure you the modern version of me is really not much different (except the contents of the bottle are slightly more adult these days). If you venture to my house on a lazy Sunday afternoon you're likely to find me in the golf room, on my couch, sacked out and drooling. My back is slowly improving and I should be back to work next week. The antibiotics I'm taking are a real treat, and the pain medication has to be taken with food, which means at 3am I'm shoveling a banana down...it's pretty sad. I missed softball this week obviously, but my team won without me...which is great except for the egomaniacal me who thinks everything will fail without me, but I try to keep that me locked up for good reason. This is a long weekend here in Canada so Shell has a nice 3-day weekend to rest up and I think we're going to work on the baby's room. Which means new reno pictures as the summer wears on! And boy is it beautiful here now. It's still fairly cool, but the gardens are starting to take some shape. click for larger, pop-up photo click for larger, pop-up photo New pictures of the puppies: Willow looking outside at the birdies click for larger, pop-up photo click for larger, pop-up photo Willow in the grass click for larger, pop-up photo To update the Canadian political blurb I posted on Wednesday... The Liberal government managed to survive by a single vote last night in the budget showdown. There will likely be an election next summer, unless something else pops up in the next few months. I finished the Ellis book on George Washington and highly recommend it to you. Now its on to Hamilton and Burr and the fun of dueling intrigue. Until next time, Cheers

The I Have What?? Edition

Yesterday was "Let's All Go To The Doctor Day". We try to book all of our medical visits on the same day so that Shell and I don't have to lose too much time having separate doctor visits on different days. Her 24 week midwife appointment went very well. They are pleased with the last ultrasound results and the baby's heartrate was 140. They are still being cautious with her, keeping her on reduced activity until after next Friday's ultrasound to see how things are progressing. If they continue to look positive they'll ease up on her restrictions and she won't have to spend 12 hours in bed a day. I on the other hand...not so good. It turns out that the bronchitis I had over the last few weeks turned into a viral infection which worked its way into my muscular system, which has been the cause of my back spasms and the pain that's been eating away at me the last week. The right side of my body is in intense pain that reaches from about midway down my back all the way up into my collar bone and through the front of my chest. My doctor has me on antibiotics and pain killers. Wonderful. I was pretty much laid up this weekend which meant that our visit from Jen and Alex found me lame. Though they seem to have a good time anyway. On Sunday they went with Shell to the big barn antique place on Trafalgar Rd, since they all share the love of shopping apparently. Then they came back and we had some grill action before we had to take them home Sunday evening. click for larger, pop-up photo click for larger, pop-up photo Speaking of Sunday... Finally someone I liked won Survivor. Fireman Tom kicked but and won the cool million. Sure I'd have prefered Stephanie, my Survivor girlfriend to have won, but she went out a few weeks ago, so Tom was my second favorite. Shell did most of the hosting this weekend so while we watched Survivor she pretty muched crashed...as did the puppies. click for larger, pop-up photo Being a dog is such hard work click for larger, pop-up photo I mean really really hard work click for larger, pop-up photo Ooo how quickly Canadian politics can change... For the Americans in the group, it's been looking as though the Paul Martin-Liberal government would fall this week, and an election called. However in a stunning move yesterday, Conservative MP Belinda Stronach, who had recently run for leader of the Conservatives, switched parties and joined the Liberals, gaining a cabinet post in the Martin government. It was a stunning move that has Tories reeling, and throwing into doubt whether the Liberals will lose a budget vote this week. The Liberal party has been in trouble recently for a huge scandal that has given the Conservatives reason to believe the time was ripe for a change. Joining with the Bloc Quebecois, the Conservatives had hoped to bring down the government this week and force an election in the next 45 days. However the Stronach switch, in addition to the alliance between the Liberals and the NDP have made the vote on the budget this week a little easier perhaps for the Liberals to pass. We shall see. The Globe and Mail has a good article about the situation if you are interested. Until next time Cheers

The Signposts Edition

A few weeks ago when we first got word that there might be a problem with the pregnancy, Shell and I made a deal that we'd just take things in little goals, a few steps at a time and not try to worry about the entire end of the pregnancy. The first such signpost would be the 24 week mark. As of tomorrow (Sunday) it will be 24 weeks and we've made it thus far. Things continue to improve and Shelley's just plugging along, not worrying too much, keeping positive. Our little girl is jumping around, kicking like mad. I will invariably hear Shell in the other room "alright little girl stop kicking mommy!" The baby also seems to become very lively when I enter the room and start talking...you think she knows her daddy's voice already? Last night we sat downstairs and watched the Cubs game, all the while Shell told her that this was Daddy's favorite baseball team...like the kid won't know that seconds out of the womb when I put a gray road jersey on her? I finally received my grades today. Historiopgraphy- B+ Conflict and Cooperation (Cold War History)- B+ 20th Century American Foreign Relations- B Thinking About the USA- B All my marks were above the course average, so that makes me feel good...would have liked a few of the A variety but next year perhaps. I'm also looking at courses for next year and I've got a few that I am desperate to get into. Revolutionary America (like that's a surprise considering its THE period I love) The European Reformation History of Modern Espionage (which always fills up before my registration date) Great Trials of History (ooo...gimme gimme gimme) there was another class that I wanted (America and the World to 1900) however as it turns out it has already been cancelled :( So now the summer is just work and softball and baby. Work is getting busier, although yesterday I tweaked my back which started to spasm just as I was lifting some French Vanilla...I had to sit down for awhile but I was able to finish out the day (though today it's killing me). I had my first softball game with my new team. We won 11-6. I went 1 for 2 (single, a fielder's choice, and two walks). It was windy and cold...just like Wrigley Field in April or old Candlestick Park everyday of the year. I'm well into my summer reading list. I'm currently reading Joseph Ellis' "His Excellency: George Washington". It's the third of Ellis' books that I've read (I have Founding Brothers, for which he won the Pulitzer, and American Sphinx: The Character of Thomas Jefferson). Ellis tries to strike a middle ground between the mythic Washington of older historiography and the post-modern criticism of Washington that is less than flattering. Instead Ellis potrays Washington as the self-determined, aloof, deeply committed soldier-patriot, but one desperate for a legacy and the protection of his image. The post-modern critique, of not just Washington but the other founders, focuses on their wealth (and its continuation) as the driving force behind the move for independence. However that critique, to me, is developed through the hindsight of a victorious empire, whereas to the founders (especially to Washington who knew the military might of the British) victory was completely uncertain. Therefore while the wealthy elite may have yearned for the higher rewards, they were also risking the most. (At the moment he was named Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, Washington was one of the wealthiest Virginians, due in part to the dowry from the widow Martha Custis that he received upon their marriage and the "army" he just inherited was little more than a collection of state militias- with the exception of the Virginia Regiment which he personally had built, trained, and taken into battle in the French and Indian War) I'm also going to finish a book I started to read a year or so ago, Thomas Fleming's "Duel" about Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. Then it's "The Wise Men: Six Friends and the World They Made", the Walter Isaacson and Evan Thomas book about George Kennan, Avril Harriman, Dean Acheson, Robert Lovett, John McCloy and Charles Bohlen, the architects of Cold War strategy and the authors of containment policy. I also want to read Isaacson's newer book about Benjamin Franklin, and there's yet another Alexander Hamilton biography by Ron Chernow. Somewhere in there I'd like to fit in the new Harry Potter book when it comes out in a few weeks and also I'm going to breakdown and read that damn Da Vinci Code since everyone else has read it already. Picture time (apologies to the LJ crowd who have already seen some of these): As always click on the picture for a larger version Some bees: click for larger, pop-up photo click for larger, pop-up photo I've been taunting some friends about my autographed Tony Kornheiser photo but they've never seen it so here it is. click for larger, pop-up photo Then of course there is Dixie and her Mum, sitting near the garden last Sunday :) click for larger, pop-up photo click for larger, pop-up photo Well we've got houseguests this weekend, so I guess I should get crackin' & cleaning up the place. Until next time Cheers

The Ultrasound Update Edition

So we're back from the ultrasound and things are much better than first suspected. They want us back in 3 weeks to have another look but they were extremely positive that everything is going to go well throughout the pregnancy. There's still a possibility that Shell won't be able to deliver the baby naturally, but we're hoping at least that she won't have to be on bed rest barring some other problem. We're not out of the woods yet, but we feel so much better. 3 weeks should give us a better knowledge of where we are so hang in there everybody. The ultrasound was very thorough and we even finally got to see that indeed, as I must admit I was hoping........ It's a GIRL!!! The people downtown were fantastic to deal with, and the radiologist (we didn't have a closed-mouth tech this time) was helpful and showed us lots of baby, including closeups of arms and legs and hands :) Unfortunately we didn't get any pictures because this was a different course of ultrasound, but I was able to see the blood pumping in the umbilibcal cord and we heard the artery pumping away. Pretty cool. Shell is feeling good aside from a slight case of starvation because the day was so long and complicated that she couldn't eat much (in fact on the way out she was so hungry she stood in front of the snack machine and I'm fairly certain she was vibrating...I was worried for innocent bystanders that she might lunge at them and cannibalize them...but alas I was able to get her a candy bar to tide her over AND SAVE LIVES!!) So we're still being cautious but very positive and hopeful that everything is going to be okay.

The Jelly Brain Edition

My brain is goo. In fact one of the reasons for this mid-week post is that after my last 3-hour final tonight I quite possibly will be unable to form complete sentences for some time. There's nothing like exams that cause you to curl up in the fetal position, chattering away like a gibbon monkey. Yesterday we saw a coyote in the neighborhood. So clearly we either live too close to wilderness OR someone in the subdivision is a Werewolf. (and not the sweet kind that plays in a band and dates the school brainiac...I watch too much 'Buffy' can you tell?) Personally I'm packing silver bullets juuuuuuuuust in case. I've been having weird dreams lately. I'm sure I have weird dreams frequently however I usually don't remember my dreams. Recently I've had dreams that included Candice Bergen, a warehouse where I was chased by the mob, and monsters. I hate Oprah btw. The other day she interviewed the woman who drove over and killed her husband with her car. Now I'm not one to get all conspiratorial but don't you think it odd she interviews a woman who ran over her husband in a car a few months after she gave every member of her audience a new CAR!?!? Clearly she's building an army of killer-car driving mad housewives. You laugh now, but when she names herself Empress of the World...you'll apologize to me. I've been so out of it lately that I went about 6 days without shaving. I finally took care of it yesterday when I realized I was starting to look like Yukon Cornelius click for larger, pop-up photo Shell has exploded. Her belly suddenly enlarged three-fold in about an hour and half one night, scaring me and her crew who insisted on taking a photo. click for larger, pop-up photo It's been raining and occasionally snowing here this week but I was able to get some new nature photos... A Blue Jay click for larger, pop-up photo and a lovely yellow flower click for larger, pop-up photo Doggy pictures galore as always: Here Willow is either playing tug with a toy, or recording her new hit single...I'm not quite sure click for larger, pop-up photo Full extended fetch :) click for larger, pop-up photo Here a rare photo of Willow's great great grandmother Helga Sheltie. No no it's just me playing with the sepia on my digital camera...made ya look. click for larger, pop-up photo Dixie is starting to get a little shaggy again click for larger, pop-up photo Watching Daddy BBQ some sausages click for larger, pop-up photo A huge Happy Birthday shout out to Miss Morghan, producer extraordinaire and yoga goddess!!! One of the huge bummers about living far away from the city is not being able to see people like Morghan on a more regular basis. Of course there's no reason why she can't come here and visit...especially when she says she going to come and I put on cologne for her...and then she breaks my heart by not coming after all...*sorry..I promised myself I wouldn't cry* Me and the rest of the JCR Elitist Intellectuals are planning a movie night slumber party soon with a marathon of Simpsons episodes and other stuff. Shell goes in for the big color ultrasound Friday, we'll update as soon as possible. Now I think I have to get back to Cold War politics and Matthew Evangelista's "Unarmed Forces". Until next time Cheers
